VA SOS trains and certifies volunteer water monitors throughout the state. Data collected by our certified monitors is sent to state agencies for use in water quality assessments. We are a nonprofit, non-governmental organization, and a project of the Virginia Division of the Izaak Walton League of America. We work with everyone from individuals to agencies to ensure that future generations inherit improved and protected streams, rivers, and estuaries across Virginia.
Without our dedicated volunteers, there would be no program. We currently
have around 350 certified volunteers (growing weekly!) monitoring approximately
220 locations in Virginia’s streams.
While training volunteers to conduct water quality monitoring is our priority activity, we also work with schools and teachers and we support local watershed stewardship organizations. We create opportunities for individuals, groups, businesses, and government to meet each other, learn about water quality resources, and network. We do this by cooperating with Citizens for Water Quality.
