General Information about the Rappahannock Watershed (From September 2006 305(b) Report, Virginia Department of Environmental Quality)

The Rappahannock Basin is located in the northeastern portion of Virginia.  The Basin's major tributaries include the Hazel River, Thornton River, Mountain Run, Rapidan River, Robinson River, Cat Point Creek, and the Corotoman River.  The topography of the Basin changes from steep to flat as it flows from the Blue Ridge Mountains to the Chesapeake Bay.  About 51% of the basin is forest; 36% is cropland and pasture and 6% is urban.

Public Health Advisories and Aquatic Life Concerns  (From September 2006 305(b) Report, Virginia Department of Environmental Quality)

Rappahannock PCBs

from the I95 bridge downstream to the mouth of the river, including the tributaries Hazel Run up to the I95 bridge and Claiborne Run up to the Rt. 1 bridge

The advisory recommends eating no more than two meals a month of American eel, blue catfish, carp, channel catfish, croaker, gizzard shad, and anadromous striped bass. Pregnant women and children are advised not to eat any of these fish.

Mountain Run PCBs

from Rt. 15/29 bridge near Culpepper to the confluence with the Rappahannock River

The advisory recommends eating no more than two meals a month of American eel. Pregnant women and children are advised not to eat any of these fish.
