VA SOS Wish List for 2007

• Continued success in collecting high quality data on our streams and rivers in Virginia.  See our monitoring locations!  No location near you - become a monitor to Save Your Stream!
• Completion of study to re-evaluated the VA SOS method
• Steady source of funding (any ideas?)
• Success of three related projects:
Statewide Coordination of Volunteer Monitoring
Virginia Watersheds Alliance (VAWA)
Virginia Foundation of Natural Resources

VA SOS trains and certifies volunteer water monitors throughout the state. Data collected by our certified monitors is sent to state agencies for use in water quality assessments. We are a nonprofit, non-governmental organization, and a project of the Virginia Division of the Izaak Walton League of America. We work with everyone from individuals to agencies to ensure that future generations inherit improved and protected streams, rivers, and estuaries across Virginia.

Without our dedicated volunteers, there would be no program. We currently have around 350 certified volunteers (growing weekly!) monitoring approximately 220 locations in Virginia’s streams.

While training volunteers to conduct water quality monitoring is our priority activity, we also work with schools and teachers and we support local watershed stewardship organizations. We create opportunities for individuals, groups, businesses, and government to meet each other, learn about water quality resources, and network. We do this by cooperating with Citizens for Water Quality

Do you want to become a monitor?  Here are the steps to becoming a VA SOS certified monitor...

Special Thanks

Our thanks is extended to the Beirne Carter Foundation, the Robins Foundation, Virginia Environmental Endowment and the Chesapeake Bay Restoration Fund (Bay License Plate Revenues) for their generous funding and support of the Save Our Streams Program in Virginia and their work to promote a healthy environment in our state.
