General Information about the New River Watershed (From October 2002 305(b) Report, Virginia Department of Environmental Quality)

The New River Basin is located in southwest Virginia.  It flows from its headwaters in North Carolina north and west to West Virginia where is flows into the confluence of the Gauley River, forming the Kanawha River, a tributary to the Ohio River.  The topography in the Basin is generally rugged, with the upper reaches of its tributaries being extremely steep.  Might mountains, narrow valleys and steep ravines characterize the basin.  Approximately 59% of the basin is forested.  Cropland and pasture make up 35% and the remaining 3% is considered urban.
