General Information about the Shenandoah Watershed (From October 2002 305(b) Report, Virginia Department of Environmental Quality)

The Shenandoah Basin begins in Augusta County in flow in a northeasterly direction approximately 100 miles to the West Virginia State line.  The topography of the Basin is characterized by rolling hills and valleys bordered by the Appalachian Mountains to the west and the Blue Ridge Mountains to the east.  The Massanutten Mountain Range divides the Shenandoah River into the North and South Forks.  Tributaries of the Shenandoah exhibit steep profiles as they drain the surrounding mountain ridge.  Forty-five percent of the basin is forested due to the large amount of federally owned land and steep topography.  Farmland and pasture account for 39% of the land area and 16% is classified as urban.
